NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

This project involved the installation of a digital urban CCTV surveillance system, which integrates into the Communicare Control Room of the Metropolitan Police Department of the City of Cape Town. The system consists of 32 surveillance cameras installed in positions in and around the CBD where gaps in existing surveillance were found, thereby providing greater coverage of the inner city and surrounding areas. These areas include Gardens, Table Bay Boulevard, Greenpoint, around the Stadium and in the CBD.

The Central Control Centre equipment consists of a networked digital video recording system and various network switches integrated with a video management system and an additional
four monitoring stations. Video consoles with monitors and PTZ control keyboards were provided and installed at each monitoring station. This enables all the video feeds from the cameras to be
monitored on a 24hr basis. The PTZ keyboards enable the operators to zoom into any picture should an event occur where closer observation is required or where tracking of people is necessary.

The communications infrastructure consists of an optical fibre network that was installed by the City of Cape Town’s IT department. Liaison with the management of this contract took place to ensure that fibre was installed in all the areas where the cameras were required. The fibre runs though out the CBD and terminates in the Communicare building. The backbone communications is controlled by Cisco 10Gigabit Ethernet switches.
