NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

This project consisted of the design and installation of a digital CCTV surveillance system, which integrates with the SSU Control Room in Cape Town. The system consists of approximately 30 surveillance cameras and related equipment and uses a high-speed digital IP network for all signal transmission.

The communications infrastructure consists of multiple wireless LAN systems, and an existing optic fibre that forms the backbone of the network. The fibre runs along the railway track and terminates in the Communicare building. The fibre is accessed at the Woodstock, Salt River and Observatory Railway Stations.

All the camera sites are divided into three clusters. Each cluster is further subdivided into groups, where communication is achieved via point-to-multipoint WLAN systems. The data from each group in the cluster is relayed to the nearest railway station and transmitted via the fibre optic backbone to the Control Centre.

The Control Centre equipment consists of a networked digital video recording system, a network switch, an integrated video management system and a review station. Video consoles with monitors and touch trackers enable the operators to view the camera video feeds in real time and detect if there are any incidents which require the authorities to take action. All footage is recorded for at least 31 days and full playback, export and review of the recordings is possible.
