NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
This project involved the Supply, Installation and Commissioning of all the equipment and software needed to establish a ITS/IFM Back Office and operational environment inside an existing building located in the Provincial Government of the Western Cape Transport Department’s Office in Leeuwen Street in Cape Town.
The integration software developed under this contract is called iTransit. It has two primary functions. The first is to perform Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) of the public buses operating in and around Cape Town. The second is to facilitate an Integrated Fare Management (IFM) System for all bus services.
The AVL system enables active vehicle tracking and generates reports on schedule adherence of the buses. This will be used to ensure that reports from bus operators on the bus routes and schedules followed by their bus drivers are correct. Accurate payment for the bus services can then be done by the PGWC. Audio communication devices have also been installed in the buses which allow communication with the bus drivers.
The IFM System was installed to enable the PGWC to keep track of the fares collected on the bus services and ensure that the correct fare is being charged according to the zone within which the bus runs. This data will be collected via an EMV compliant card reader system and entered into a database at the Leeuwen Street Back Office. Various reports can then be generated using the iTransit software.
The control room operations include incident detection and management, public transport management and traffic monitoring. The control room is equipped for these functions through communication with existing and new CCTV and other monitoring systems installed in and around the city. These systems include the public transport management system and the SSU, ANPR and FMS CCTV systems.
