NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
This project entailed the design, supply, installation and commissioning of remote traffic monitoring systems (RTMS) and equipment at 22 sites along the N2 between the Airport and City Centre. Aspects of the remote monitoring of traffic covered include the detailed recording of traffic volumes, vehicle types and vehicle speeds during all traffic conditions. The roadside sensors are capable of recording multi-lane data up to 10 lanes separately.
Computer hardware for a complete workstation for the evaluation and analysis of collected data,including a control desk, operator console, monitors, keyboard and mouse are installed at the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) in Goodwood.
Custom written computer software to interface between the recorded data and a web based user interface was also supplied for evaluation and analysis on the City of Cape Town’s System.
The communications infrastructure consists of a Bluetooth local link, which will be used for roadside programming and configuration of the sensor; and a GSM Modem, which will be used to transmit the data from each sensor site to a central collection point for integration into the City of Cape Town’s RTMS Server Database.

To design, inspect and contract manage the remote traffic monitoring system on the N2 link between the Airport and the City Centre.
